Quick Write

WALT embed screencastify onto my blog. I chose my most recent work to post. I found it challenging to look at the camera.  I also found it hard to tilt the screen to the correct angle. It was much quicker to embed than to download.  Next time I will look at the camera.

Why Are Bees Declining? |Information Report

 Success Criteria:
We will plan and then write an information report on a topic of our choice related to bees.

Our report will:
  • Be interesting!
  • Give information about a topic of our choice related to bees.
  • Show a clear link to our planning.
  • Start with an opening statement about our topic.
  • Have at least 3 paragraphs.  Each paragraph will have an opening statement and a series of facts related to that statement.
  • Include some complex or compound sentence structures.
  • Include at least one diagram, photograph, illustration or map to go with the text.
  • Finish with a general statement about the topic.
  • Use information from at least 3 different sources.  This information will be written in our own words and we will write down our sources at the end of our report.

Why Are  Bees Declining?
Bees are dying and they need to pollinate our flowers. If the bees died we would not have much food because around 100 crop species feed 90% of the world. Around 70% of our food grows from a flower and needs to be pollinated so they can reproduce seeds so they can grow again.   About 200-250 bees die a day. In 2016 US beekeepers lost 33% of their bees. If bees die and stop pollinating not only will the plants die but the animals that eat the pollinated plants will also die which will mess up the food chain.

One of the reasons that bees are dying is because they are getting poisoned by pesticides. Pesticides are usually sprayed over plants. The bees crawl over the plants and the chemicals attack insects by harming their nerve systems. Scientists also say that the pesticides interfere with the bees brain stopping them from learning so they don't remember what food they need to eat so they slowly die. Their population has gone down by 25 percent  in the past years.

The second reason why bees are dying is because of Varroa mites and they are the worst problem. The mites sneak into the beehive and they wait for the wax to cover the spots were the bees lay their eggs. When they get in they wait for the bees to lay their eggs. When the bee lays the eggs the mites feed on the eggs so they can reproduce and repeat what they do. The mite attached to the body of the bee and weakens the bee by sucking its body which kills them.

Lake Daniells Day Tramp | WPCA

On wednesday the 12th of June room one and room eight went on the Lake Daniells tramp.
When we got to school in the morning we checked if we had all the gear we needed once we had
done we left school at about 8:45.

The drive to Lake Daniells was about an hour and a half. When we got we did our number callouts
and then we started walking down the track. The start of the track was easy until we got to the uphill
parts. When we arrived at the lake we sat down to eat some lunch and rest.

On the way back me, Sam, Lincoln, Cullam and Tlyer carried big logs for about 4km so
we could throw them off the bridge into the water for our tribal stick ceremony. After that we
walked back to the carpark and drove back to school. We got back the time was abouy 6:00.

Marae Visit | WPCA

This week room one and room eight stayed the night at the Arahura Marae.
When we arrived we walked to the gates and waited for a few minutes to be let in. when we got let in the gates the tangata whenua started calling us to the front of the marae. after that we took off our shoes and sat down inside and then sung some waiata and we also gave them our gift.

After that we went back out to the cars to grab our bags and put them in the place where we were going to sleep. Then we learnt about the stories and history of the carvings that were in the marae.

A few hours later we got the options of 2 activitys I picked carving and rippa rugby. The next day we walked to the beach for about an hour to make sand sculptures of the characters from the story we were told before we left. Then we packed up our stuff and left to do the mananui tramline walk.

Callaghans Ridge Tramp | WPCA

This term 11.4.19  room 1 and room 8 went to Callegens Ridge for a all day walk.
Mrs Kemp gave us a scavenger hunt to do in our groups while walking. The people in my group were Callan and Xavier and we found everything in the scavenger hunt.

When it was lunch time before we could eat we had to build a bivouac to shelter us while eating.
Then we had to pack up our bivouac and start walking again. There was a lot of puddles and roots on the track so we had to make sure we didn’t fall over.

After that we had to walk downhill alot which hurt my knees. Then we got to a flat easy part next to the river. But that part also had a lot of muddy puddle to avoid. After that we reached the bridge and a few minutes later we reached the end of the track.

Beach Cookout

Today Ruma tahi and Ruma waru went to the beach for a beach cookout at Watson creek in Karoro. My group made steak sandwiches and pancakes. The people in my group are Zac, Nevey and Mackenzie. We also had Mrs Glue with us.

We had to build a campfire with wood we found on the beach. Once we had built our fire we had to prepare our food and light the fire. We had to wait a while for the wood to burn into hot embers so we could cook on it.

When we cooked our steak we had to put some oil in the frying pan and then put the steak in and on the fire. When the steak was cooked we put it in some bread and started eating it. After that we started to make our pancakes.

When we cooked them we had no normal butter so we had to use some garlic butter. We put them on they frying pan and they started to stick to the pan so we had to scrape them off. But they still tasted good.

Then we cleaned our pans and and put out our fires and packed up and walked back to school.

Lightning Never Strikes Twice

WALT use adjectives and similes to describe a setting clearly

Lightning Never Strikes Twice

Aaaaaaah screamed the old fat cat lady outside as she woke me up from my sleep. I looked out the window and I saw IT! The MASSIVE Black cloud was flying above the windmill
I knew there was no time to run. The sky turned grey BANG! Lightning had put the cat lady’s house in to flames AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!! She repeated as her hair burst into flames. I hid under some boxes and acted like I never saw anything. I peeked out the window and I noticed another windmill opposite me I could see a slight figure of a girl standing at the window. Crack! The wind started to pull the windmill apart. It broke like a popsicle stick house. Suddenly I saw that the roof was falling and I knew that it was the end.
